City Takes Lead In Curbing Private Bus Permit Violations With GPS Surveillance

Must read

To curb permit violations and ensure orderly transport operations, the state transport department in Bengaluru has embraced advanced technology. It has mandated GPS surveillance on private buses to monitor their routes and prevent unauthorized operations. This move comes amidst concerns that many private buses deviate from their permitted routes, impacting the revenue and operational efficiency of the State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC).

Bengaluru, a hub for the private bus industry with over 21,000 buses operating across 18 districts, faces significant challenges in regulating their routes and schedules. The transport department issues permits specifying routes and timings to prevent overlap with KSRTC buses. However, rampant violations, including buses operating on unauthorized routes and falsifying documents such as Performance Certificates (FC) and insurance, have been a recurring issue.

To address these concerns, the state government previously mandated the installation of Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTD) and Emergency Panic Buttons in all private buses. This initiative, implemented since November 2023, aims to enforce permit compliance but also to enhance passenger safety.

Around 6,000 cases of permit violations are reported annually, underscoring the need for stricter enforcement and technological intervention. The GPS surveillance will enable real-time tracking of private buses, ensuring they adhere to designated routes and schedules specified in their permits.

By leveraging technology to monitor and regulate private bus operations, Bengaluru aims to streamline public transport services, enhance passenger safety, and safeguard the interests of state-operated transport services.
