New Delhi

The eSankhyiki portal was launched by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) on Saturday. Its aim is to establish a comprehensive system for managing and sharing official statistics easily across India. The portal, accessible at https://esankhyiki.mospi.gov.in, provides timely data for planners, policy-makers, researchers, and the public.

It consists of two sections, the Data Catalogue lists various national statistics like National Accounts, Consumer Price Index, Industrial Production Index, and Surveys on Industry and Household Expenditure. The second section, Macro Indicators, offers time-series data of key macroeconomic indicators. Users can filter and visualize data, download custom datasets, and access them through APIs. This section includes data from the past decade on National Accounts, Consumer Price Index, Industrial Production Index, and Surveys on Industry.

Statistics Day in India honors the contributions of Professor (late) Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis to statistics and economic planning. It aims to raise awareness, especially among the youth, about the role of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy-making. The theme for Statistics Day 2024 is ‘Use of data for decision-making’. Arvind Panagariya, Chairman of the 16th Finance Commission, highlighted Professor P.C. Mahalanobis’s influence on India’s statistical system and advocated for continued data-driven policy-making. Saurabh Garg, Secretary of MoSPI, discussed recent initiatives to improve data collection and engagement through the eSankhyiki portal and other means.
