Bangalore International Airport (BIAL) is set for a series of substantial improvements and expansions across its terminals and cargo facilities in the upcoming years, aimed at enhancing both passenger capacity and cargo handling capabilities.
The refurbishment of Terminal 1 is scheduled to commence in August 2024, with preliminary work already underway to minimize disruptions for travelers during the renovation phase. This includes converting international areas into domestic zones and upgrading facilities such as baggage handling and security. The goal is to accommodate up to 35 million passengers annually.
Simultaneously, Terminal 2 (T2) is undergoing a significant expansion project. The initial phase covers around 255,000 square meters and is designed to handle up to 25 million passengers annually. The second phase, expected to be completed by 2028, will add another 200,000 square meters, increasing the terminal’s capacity by an additional 20 million passengers.
Terminal 1 currently manages 70,000 passengers daily, while Terminal 2 caters to 40,000 passengers daily.
Looking ahead, BIAL is exploring plans to construct Terminal 3 by the late 2020s or early 2030s, aiming to increase the airport’s overall handling capacity to approximately 90-100 million passengers per year.
BIAL plans to connect T1, T2, and potentially T3 with a rail system to facilitate seamless passenger movement, replacing the current shuttle bus service operating every 7-8 minutes between T1 and T2.
BIAL is also focusing on expanding its cargo handling capabilities. The airport aims to increase its capacity to handle up to 1 million metric tonnes of cargo annually by the end of the decade. Projects include the development of a new Domestic Cargo Terminal and a state-of-the-art logistics park managed by Air India SATS Airport Services (AISATS).
