Following the district’s ranking last in the 2023-24 SSSC results statewide, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Garima Panwar has ordered a one-year suspension of teachers’ increments in government and aided high schools. The move came after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, during a district progress review meeting in Vijayanagara, suggested disciplinary action against the Deputy Director of Public Instruction and Block Educational Officer due to poor SSLC performance.
Despite efforts to improve results through various educational and administrative initiatives, the district achieved only 54.53 percent in SSLC-1 for the year 2023-24. Subject teachers whose results fell below the district average received notices at the school level but no further action has been taken yet. Consequently, Garima Panwar directed school headmasters to withhold increments for subject teachers in government and aided schools scoring below the district average.
The order impacts 760 teachers among 1,435 working in high schools, with an overall shortage of 3,000 teachers in the district when primary levels are considered. This decision means affected teachers will lose an annual increment of approximately Rs 7,000 to Rs 8,000 based on their basic salary.Criticism has arisen over the fairness of suspending increments for teachers not at fault for the district’s poor performance, despite the challenges in teacher shortages and genuine efforts made to improve educational outcomes.
