Indian Railways conducted a successful trial run on Thursday for the newly constructed Chenab Rail Bridge, the highest railway bridge in the world. This bridge spans between Sangaldan in Ramban district and Reasi, with rail services expected to start soon, according to officials.

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the successful trial run of a MEMU train on the Sangaldan-Reasi section of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project via a post on X, celebrating the achievement for Jammu & Kashmir.

Currently, trains operate from Kanyakumari to Katra and from Baramulla to Sangaldan in the Kashmir Valley. The USBRL project is scheduled for completion by the end of the year. PM Modi inaugurated the Banihal-Sangaldan section of the USBRL project on February 20, 2024.

The project has seen phased development: the 118 km Qazigund-Baramulla section was completed in October 2009, the 18 km Banihal-Qazigund section in June 2013, and the 25 km Udhampur-Katra section in July 2014.

Standing 359 meters above the Chenab River, the Chenab Rail Bridge is about 35 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower and spans 1,315 meters in length. This bridge is a critical part of the broader project aimed at connecting the Kashmir Valley to the Indian Railway network.
