Sharad Pawar, NCP (SP) chief, highlighted Thursday that the Centre must proactively resolve the ongoing Maratha-OBC quota conflict rather than remaining a bystander.

Speaking in Baramati, Pune district, the former Union minister highlighted the necessity for legislative amendments and policy changes at both state and central levels to address the issue.

Earlier this year, the Maharashtra legislature unanimously passed a bill allocating a distinct 10% reservation in education and jobs to the Maratha community. However, discord persists as the Marathas now seek inclusion within the OBC quota.

Activist Manoj Jarange has been advocating for the recognition of Kunbis as sage soyare of Marathas, pushing for Kunbi certificates that would grant Marathas eligibility for OBC quotas in government roles and education. This demand has sparked demonstrations, including a hunger strike by two OBC activists in Jalna district, urging protection of existing OBC reservations.

Pawar underscored that, the governments, especially the Centre, must lead in addressing both communities’ demands to prevent escalating tensions and social unrest.

Pawar reiterated the necessity for decisive action by the government, stating that, the Centre cannot afford to be a passive observer in this matter.
