Israeli HC Suspends State Comptroller’s Probe Into October 7 Failures

State Comptroller Matanyahu Englman was instructed by Israel’s High Court of Justice on Sunday to halt his inquiry into the security services’ October 7 shortcomings until a July hearing.
Reports evaluating Israeli readiness and the efficacy of state policies are frequently released by the comptroller, also referred to as the state ombudsman.
Government watchdog groups petitioned the court to block Englman’s investigation, claiming that the investigation would harm the army’s operations that the security issues went beyond the comptroller’s jurisdiction and that the investigation would not hold political figures accountable for decisions made in the period preceding Hamas attacks on communities close to the Gaza border.

Justice Gila Canfy-Steinitz of the HC decided in May not to halt the State Comptroller’s investigation. However, she stated on Sunday that she had to halt Englman’s investigation until a hearing in July due to classified responses from the security agencies.
Canfy-Steinitz ruled that I order the suspension of the investigation procedures in everything that relates to the IDF and Shin Bet due to the complex security reality, the planned scope of the investigation, which will deal, among other things, with the combat support system and core operational issues, and the preparation required to respond to it [the investigation] at the current time.
