Metro Green Line Extension Delayed Until September

Must read

The commercial operations of the 3.7-km Green Line extension of the Metro from Nagasandra to Madavara are now expected to begin only by the end of September, according to Metro sources. Initially, operations were projected to start by the end of July, but crucial infrastructure and testing work are still pending.

The new route, costing Rs 298 crore, includes three stations: Manjunath Nagar, Chikkabidarakallu (Jindal Nagar), and Madavara (BIEC). While the stations at Manjunath Nagar and Chikkabidarakallu have been completed, some work remains at the Madavara station.

A senior official from Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) explained that electrical and signaling systems have not yet been installed, requiring at least a month to complete. Additionally, a third train needs to be prepared to supply power for operations. Testing and trial runs must be conducted for at least 45 days before the Metro Rail Safety Commissioner can grant approval, pushing the start date to late September.

Minor works at Madavara station are expected to be finished by the end of June. BMRCL Managing Director Maheshwar Rao had previously stated that the Nagasandra to Madavara metro train service would commence by the end of July.

When asked about the delay, another senior official cited the impact of Parliament elections and workers returning to their hometowns, which slowed progress. This minor route was originally scheduled to open to the public by August 2019, but faced a five-year delay due to various issues.

This extension is expected to benefit visitors to the Bangalore International Exhibition Center, with a station conveniently located nearby. It will also serve residents of Nelamangala, Makali, and Madanayakanahalli, and provide a connection for those entering Bangalore from Tumakuru.
