Thiruvananthapuram

Following the onset of the Southwest monsoon in Kerala, heavy rainfall has pounded various regions, particularly the southern and central districts, leading to landslides, tree uprooting, and waterlogging.

The downpours wreaked havoc in high-range areas of Kottayam and Idukki, while Thrissur witnessed severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red alerts for Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kozhikode, with orange and yellow alerts for other districts, signifying varying degrees of rainfall intensity.

Landslides occurred in Poochapra and Kolappra areas of Idukki, causing property damage but no casualties. Mudslides prompted traffic restrictions on the Thodupuzha-Puliyanmala highway, and residents along Thodupuzha and Muvattupuzha rivers were advised to be cautious due to increased dam water release. In Kottayam, heavy rainfall led to waterlogging, while Thrissur faced intense downpours causing disruptions in transportation. Authorities warned of flooding in low-lying areas and advised people to stay vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel. The early onset of monsoon, attributed partly to cyclone Remal’s influence, underscores the importance of preparedness for the rainy season, crucial for India’s agricultural economy.
