Child Rights Panel Pays Surprise Visit To Schools Functioning In Summer Vacation

Must read

A complaint was lodged with the KCPCR by the Karnataka School College Parents’ Associations Co-Ordination Committee, alleging that certain private schools were operational from April 15, despite repeated circulars from the department of school education and literacy instructing schools to reopen only after May 28. Responding to these complaints, the KCPCR conducted surprise visits to private unaided schools conducting classes during the summer vacation. KCPCR Chairperson Naganna Gowda stated that after receiving parental complaints, surprise visits were made, and school managements were warned to immediately declare holidays.

Following KCPCR’s directive to take action against such violative schools, the commissioner of school education recently issued a circular instructing Block Education Officers to ensure schools observe summer vacation until May 28. Despite this, some schools persisted in flouting regulations and child rights, prompting further surprise visits by KCPCR to schools in Rajajinagar and adjacent areas. During these visits, school authorities attempted to justify their actions by claiming to conduct remedial classes for underperforming students.

However, investigations revealed that classes were being held even for grade 1 students. KCPCR ensured that these classes were immediately discontinued, with reopening slated only after May 28. B N Yogananda, president of the Karnataka School College Parents Associations Co-Ordination Committee, emphasized the importance of schools adhering to their respective boards’ norms and timetables. The committee indicated its intention to communicate with the school education department, recommending action against erring schools.
