14th Anniversary Of Plane Crash, District Administration Pays Tribute To Those Who Died

It has been 14 years since the plane crash that took place at the Mangalore International Airport.  The Air India Express flight from Dubai to Mangalore crashed at Mangalore International Airport on May 22, 2010. 158 people died in that dark incident.

On May 22, 2010, around 6 am, a flight from Dubai to Mangalore landed safely,  but the pilot inadvertently veered forward on the runway, crashed into the control tower and fell into a deep pit outside the premises. A total of 158 people, including six crew members, were burnt to death in this accident. The dead included 135 adults, 19 children and four infants. Out of which 8 miraculously escaped.  

As soon as the plane fell like a ball of fire, 12 dead bodies were charred and burnt beyond recognition, a mass cremation was conducted by the district administration near the Koolur river. Every year commemoration is held by the district administration at the plane crash memorial.

Commemoration is held on this day at the plane crash memorial near Koolur Airport in Mangalore. In the commemoration programme held on Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner MP Mullai Mugilan, District Superintendent of Police CB Rishyant and other officials, the families of those who died in the plane crash offered silent prayers at the tragedy memorial and offered floral tributes.

Speaking to the media,  Deputy Commissioner Mullai Mugilan said that the district administration and the families have celebrated the anniversary of the memorial made in memory of 158 people who died in the tragedy that happened 14 years ago. We have done this in a meaningful way by increasing the security at the airport in memory of him,  he said.
