MCC Orders Quality Check On Water Supplied Through Tankers

In the wake of cholera cases in Bengaluru and the state being hit by drought, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has initiated preventive measures, and is urging residents to exercise caution regarding water sourced through tankers. With the water in the Thumbe dam depleting, hotels, restaurants, paying guest accommodations and apartments are sourcing water through tankers.

CL Anand, Commissioner of MCC said that in an attempt to prevent the outbreak of a waterborne disease in the city, the MCC has mandated agencies responsible for tanker water supply to conduct water quality tests at NABL-recognised labs, and submit a report on the same to the executive engineer, water supply division of the MCC, by Saturday. Failure to comply will result in appropriate legal action against the agency. The Commissioner has advised the public to verify water quality reports before use, as tankers may draw water from open wells or borewells, he said.

Further, the commissioner said that the MCC is not supplying water through tankers anywhere, and potable water supply is only through the network.  If there are cases of areas not getting water due to problems in the network, only then is water provided through tankers. The MCC is in the process of compiling data on all tanker operators in Mangaluru city, and will ensure that quality water is provided,” he said.

Regarding the city’s water supply, and considering the present situation, Anand said the corporation can sustain water distribution until June 15.  The region is expecting rain, which could improve the situation. There is a need for judicious water use. The MCC is trying to spread this message in every possible way. We have requested the apartments to be cautious as they are the major consumers, Anand said.
