Nearly a month has passed since the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) installed a sewage treatment plant (STP) at Vibhutipura lake in the city. However, the STP remains non-operational as the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) has yet to provide the necessary power connection.
The 1.5 MLD-capacity STP holds the potential to replenish the lake and facilitate the recharge of nearby borewells. Residents recall that the lake rejuvenation initiative began in 2017, costing Rs 3 crore, during which the contracted party cleared the silt. Subsequently, in August 2021, approval for the STP was granted at an additional cost of Rs 4 crore.
Residents express frustration over the prolonged delay, citing promises from officials that the STP would commence operations within a month of BESCOM’s power connection. Despite the passage of a year since the equipment was set up, the STP remains idle due to the ongoing power supply issue.
BBMP Executive Engineer Bhupradha assured that desilting efforts are underway, with immediate plans for silt removal. Additionally, officials are in regular communication with BESCOM to expedite the power connection process, emphasizing the benefits of recycled water once the STP becomes operational.
Special Commissioner of Health at Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Surolkar Vikas Kishore, recently urged the BWSSB to undertake preventive measures against communicable diseases. Surolkar emphasized the importance of maintaining chlorination levels in water samples, conducting regular inspections in areas prone to epidemics, and addressing water pipe leakages promptly.
Meanwhile, BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasat Manohar announced an extension of the deadline for installing aerators in various establishments until April 30. This decision aims to conserve water by restricting flow in taps, with non-compliance resulting in reduced water supply and fines as per the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Act-1964.
