The Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) commenced a three-day hunger strike in support of their demands, including Ladakh’s statehood and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. This protest, joined by people from various backgrounds, aimed to symbolically oppose the Central government’s stance.

Simultaneously, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike in Leh entered its 19th day, expressing dissatisfaction with the Union home ministry’s perceived betrayal amid stalled talks. The KDA and Leh-based Apex Body jointly lead this movement, advocating for job reservations, a Rajya Sabha seat, and other concerns since Ladakh became a Union Territory (UT) in August 2019.

Over 200 volunteers, including Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Chief Executive Councillor Jaffar Akhoon, gathered at Hussaini Park to launch the hunger strike in solidarity with Wangchuk. The protest underscored discontent over the government’s response, despite multiple discussions with the home ministry yielding no tangible progress.

The hunger strikes in Leh and Kargil will culminate on March 26, with plans to announce further actions. Prominent KDA leader Sajjad Kargili emphasized the community’s commitment to peaceful advocacy and urged the government to address their concerns.

Meanwhile, Wangchuk highlighted the growing support for his cause despite challenging conditions, expressing dismay over perceived government betrayal and calling for public engagement in Ladakh’s plight.
