Union Of Private Transport Organizations Welcomes Withdrawal Of Bike Taxi Scheme

Must read

The Union of Private Transport Organizations applauds the State Government’s decision to retract the bike taxi scheme, as per the notification dated March 6, 2024. The federation, collectively and individually under its president, extends sincere gratitude to Media Friends, the Transport Minister, and the Chief Minister for their decisive action. Initially introduced to combat air pollution, the ambitious project to introduce electric two-wheelers inadvertently became a tool for national and international corporations to exploit. Large companies flouted state and central regulations, resulting in disorder and jeopardizing the livelihoods of over seven lakh families, including auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers.

Instances of misconduct, including failure to ensure passenger safety and non-compliance with legal requirements, were rampant among bike taxi operators. Numerous complaints and a city-wide protest in 2013 highlighted the detrimental impact of the scheme on public safety and existing transport services.

The Transport Ministry’s decision to revoke the bike taxi scheme marks a pivotal moment. The onus now lies on the Transport Department and traffic police to enforce the ban effectively. The collaboration of media partners in raising awareness and the unwavering support of the Transport Minister and CM have been instrumental in addressing this pressing issue. The Federation of Private Transport Associations reiterates its appreciation for the government’s responsiveness and reaffirms its commitment to upholding public welfare and transport integrity.
