Senior Civil Judge and Member Secretary of District Legal Services Authority C Chandan said that it is a matter of regret that women are being raped in a place where they should be very safe.

He was speaking at inauguration of two day orientation training workshop on the role of stakeholders on the protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act-2005 organised jointly by  District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, District Legal Services Authority, Women and Child Development Department and the Shimoga Multipurpose Social Service Society.

We should treat everyone as equal. Nature does not discriminate, but man does. Violence against women has been going on since time immemorial. Discrimination still exists even though our convention provides equality. Many rape cases are not recorded due to family honor protection, fear and hundreds of other reasons. They come to file cases when there is no way to stop them. Concerned departments, including the police, should listen calmly to their problems and provide value-based justice.

ASP Anil Kumar Bhumaraddy said, ours is a male-dominated society and there is a discriminatory attitude from birth.” Sometimes we hesitate to say that we are a progressive society.  193 countries have signed the Act on Protection of Women and Children. In 2005, the Protection from Domestic Violence Act was enacted. But there is a lack of understanding about this, he said.

Women and Child Development Department Deputy Director BH Krishnappa, SMSS Director Father Clifford Roshan Pinto, Women and Child Development Department District Narrator Dr. Santosh Kumar, Women and Child Development Officer N Chandrappa, Lawyers, Police and staff were present in the programme.
