Persistent Garbage Dumping Despite CCTV, Locals Urge Action From Corporation

Despite warning boards in place, a significant amount of garbage, consisting of large plastic covers and bags, is consistently dumped within 50 meters of the main road. Street dogs often tear into these bags, scattering waste onto the road. A CCTV camera has been installed on a tree at the location to deter individuals from discarding garbage, but locals allege that Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) health officials are not effectively monitoring the footage or penalising offenders.

This issue dates back two years when environmentalist Jayaprakash Ekkur, dismayed by the irresponsible behaviour of the public, protested alone for a week with a placard at the same spot. In response to his protest, the MCC installed a CCTV camera. However, according to information from local residents, the same practice of improper waste disposal has persisted despite the preventive measures.

Jayaprakash Ekkur remarked, children on their way to UBMC Higher Primary School at Gorigudda and Kitel Memorial High School, churchgoers and morning walkers all use the same road and are forced to witness the unsightly scene of a garbage pile along with the foul smell.

Rakesh, a local resident, suspects that individuals from catering businesses are responsible for dumping garbage during the early hours, possibly coming from distant areas. He suggests that if MCC officials actively monitor the situation, offenders could be tracked down.

Jacintha, the MCC Member for Falnir ward, acknowledged the issue, stating, some unknown individuals are responsible for discarding the garbage. Despite my efforts to bring this to the attention of concerned MCC officials, residents continue to question me. Warning signs and a CCTV camera have been installed at the location, but catching offenders in the act is essential for effective enforcement.
