Higher Education Minister MC Sudhakar said that the state government will initiate a comprehensive probe into multiple alleged scams that occurred in the past at Mangalore University (MU).
Sudhakar, an alumnus of MU, told media persons, I am not aware of the financial irregularities associated with the hostel for foreign students, installation of solar facilities, street light and laptop procurements.
I learned about these issues only from the media present here. I will gather all the relevant information and documents related to the matter, and subsequently, initiate a probe.
When media persons brought to the notice of the Minister that the construction of the hostel for foreign students has been ongoing for the past seven years, despite funds being released from MU’s exchequer, Sudhakar responded, I urge anyone with documents related to scams to submit them to my office.
MU’s Finance Officer Y Sangappa said that Rs 36 Crore has been spent on the project so far. Interestingly, the project was officially inaugurated by the then MU Vice-Chancellor, K Byrappa, just before retiring from office, even though the complex was still under construction, said Sudhakar.
Regarding the administrative and other challenges arising from the bifurcation of MU and the establishment of Kodagu University, Sudhakar said that it was a mistake made by the previous government without adhering to any norms.
Kodagu University is operating in a state of confusion. The previous government, which initiated the university, did not follow any statutes. Additionally, it imposed numerous restrictions on the new university, such as revenue generation limitations and a ban on acquiring new vehicles. These constraints and regulations are detrimental to the smooth functioning of a new university. I have requested a detailed report, and will discuss the matter with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, said Sudhakar.
