According to a Wall Street Journal survey, Donald Trump has taken a slight lead over Joe Biden in national polling for the 2024 presidential election. This revelation comes a day after President Biden referred to his predecessor as despicable during an event in California. The Wall Street Journal poll indicates that President Biden has the lowest approval rating of his presidency, consistent with recent studies causing concern among Democrats less than a year before the upcoming election. The survey shows Trump leading Biden by four points, 47 per cent to 43 per cent, marking the first time this poll has favored the former US president in a head-to-head assessment of the likely 2024 White House matchup. When considering five potential third-party and independent candidates, drawing a combined 17 per cent support, Trump’s lead expands to six points, 37-31. Despite expressing his desire for a second term, many in the Democratic party are concerned about Biden’s advancing age (81 on election day and 86 after eight years in the White House if re-elected) and are urging him to reconsider. The recent indictment of President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, in California on nine criminal tax charges adds further challenges to his path to re-election.
