Government Implements Comprehensive Power Reforms To Meet Rising Demand Amid Drought

Must read

In a strategic move to address the escalating power demand amidst severe drought conditions, the Karnataka State Government has implemented a series of robust measures and initiatives. These measures aim to not only meet the surging electricity requirements but also to alleviate the impact of the ongoing water crisis. Under the directive of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, the state authorities have diligently worked towards enhancing power generation capacities. Through a combination of increased power generation, section 11 imposition, power swapping from other states, and strategic purchases from the energy market, the government successfully restored a full 7-hour power supply to the critical IP set feeders. With the daily state power demand now hovering around 14,000 MW, of which IP set power demand accounts for approximately 4500 MW, the state has intensified efforts to fortify its energy reserves in anticipation of the impending summer months. The Energy Department’s meticulous preparation for the upcoming summer involves a calculated projection of power demand between 15,500 MW to 16,500 MW for the months of February through April 2024. To meet this demand, the state has strategically procured power from the energy market and initiated power swapping agreements with states like Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. Furthermore, significant emphasis has been placed on bolstering state thermal generation capabilities. Steps have been taken to maximize thermal generation levels, reactivate generators that were previously on AOH, and significantly increase power generation from KPCL thermal stations. The state is also gearing up to commission the Yelahanka gas plant, which boasts a capacity of 370 MW, and has initiated short-term power purchases and coal quantity increments to bridge the demand-supply gap. Notably, the government has decided to waive outstanding dues for specific consumer categories, including Bhagya Jyothi/Kuteera Jyothi consumers and coffee growers with IP sets, providing much-needed relief during these challenging times.
