Even As Onion Prices Have Gone Up, The Growers Are Not Happy

Though onion prices have gone up in the state, farmers are not happy. Due to lack of rain, the onion has dried up even before it is formed, bringing tears to the eyes of the farmers. Hundreds of farmers in Yarehanchinala village of Kukanur taluk in the district had spent thousands of rupees to grow onions. But the farmers who had dreamt of a good crop have now been struck by lightning.

The price of onion in the market is increasing day by day. This time, the monsoon rains have failed and even the rabi season is not coming on time and the onion is getting spoiled due to lack of water. If it had rained, the lumps would have flourished. The farmers have left the unripe onions unused in the fields. This is the reason why the demand for onions in the market has come down and the prices are increasing.

At present, the price of onion in the market is more than Rs 7,000 per quintal. Farmers would have benefited if they had got this price when there was a good harvest. But even though the prices are high, the farmers are not getting any profit as they do not have onions.

On the one hand, the crop is not in hand. On the other hand, the government’s drought relief has also not come. In such a situation, how can we survive throughout the year? We have already removed the weeds that have grown in the middle of the onion crop many times. They have not yet been paid. Neelavva, a farmer woman, said she was in a position to wait for the government’s relief to come.
