During the launch of the state government’s ‘Griha Jyoti scheme,’ concerns were voiced about potential misuse if electricity were provided for free and compared to an attic, becoming a burden on the government. However, the customers of Hubli Electricity Supply Company (Hescom) have demonstrated otherwise. In August, when the ‘Griha Jyoti scheme’ was implemented, Hescom customers displayed responsible usage, using less electricity than initially anticipated. A total of 35 lakh customers from Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Uttara Kannada, Belgaum, Bagalkote, and Vijayapur districts registered under the scheme. They collectively consumed 159.82 million units of electricity in August, marking the lowest consumption compared to the previous four months. In the months preceding August, electricity consumption was recorded at 174.41 million units in April, 191.29 million units in May, 215.71 million units in June, and 166.06 million units in July. August’s usage was notably lower, with over 6 million units of electricity saved compared to the previous month, dispelling concerns about potential misuse of free electricity.
