Indo-Canadian Relations Impact Khushwant Singh Literary Festival

Must read

Kasauli

The 12th edition of the Khushwant Singh Literary Festival held in picturesque Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh, saw discussions extending beyond books to the prolonged diplomatic strain in Indo-Canadian relations. Former Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) chief A.S. Dulat and former Canadian premier Ujjal Dosanjh expressed serious concern about the situation. While primarily discussing their books, ‘The Ties That Divide Us’ by Dosanjh and ‘A Life In The Shadows’ by Dulat, the context shifted to the diplomatic row between India and Canada. This tension arose following allegations of a potential link between Indian government agents and the killing of Khalistan extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. Dosanjh suggested that both the Indian and Canadian governments should engage in talks to defuse the ongoing crisis for the sake of the common people. He further proposed that India relax visa restrictions in light of the festive season. Dosanjh, in conversation with Kim Lalli, acknowledged that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau might have acted hastily by holding Indian agencies responsible for Nijjar’s killing. He believed that relations between the two countries should not have deteriorated to this extent. Discussing his book, Dosanjh traced his journey from a remote village in Punjab to Canada in his early twenties. He emphasized his desire for Indo-Canadian relations to return to normal, as he carried both cultures with him. Regarding the activities of Khalistani elements in Canada, Dosanjh maintained that he had always been clear on his stance. While he supported their right to express their ideas, he strongly condemned any resort to violence. He urged the Canadian government to prevent disturbances of peace and control elements promoting the dismemberment of a friendly democratic country. Dosanjh emphasized that Khalistani elements should come to Punjab in India if they were dedicated to promoting the idea of Khalistan.
