The Indian Air Force (IAF) conducted air-to-air refueling for Egyptian Air Force aircraft, including MIG and Rafale fighters, during the ongoing BRIGHT STAR-23 Exercise. Exercise ‘BRIGHT STAR-23,’ a biennial multilateral tri-service exercise, commenced at Cairo (West) Air Base, Egypt on August 27 and will continue until September 16. In addition to the IAF, contingents from the US, Saudi Arabia, Greece, and Qatar are participating in the exercise. This marks the first time that the IAF is partaking in this defense exercise. The primary objective of the exercise is to practice planning and executing joint operations, fostering bonds across borders, and furthering strategic relations among participating nations, as stated by the Ministry of Defence. During the exercise, the IAF’s IL-78 air-to-air refueling aircraft refueled Egyptian Air Force aircraft, showcasing the strong bonds of friendship in the skies over Egypt. The IAF contingent includes five MiG-29, two IL-78, two C-130, and two C-17 aircraft. Additionally, personnel from the IAF’s Garud Special Forces and squadrons 28, 77, 78, and 81 are participating in the exercise. Furthermore, the IAF’s transport aircraft have airlifted approximately 150 Indian Army personnel joining the exercise. India and Egypt have a longstanding and deep-rooted relationship, with a history of joint development of aero-engines and aircraft in the 1960s. Indian counterparts also provided training to Egyptian pilots. Recent visits by the Chief of Air Forces of both countries, as well as visits by the Indian Defence Minister and Prime Minister to Egypt, have further strengthened the relationship. Regular joint training exercises between their Armed Forces have also enhanced their collaboration.
