Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced the first round of relief measures to aid those affected by the massive floods that have devastated parts of the country. The floods, caused by a storm named Daniel, have claimed the lives of at least 15 people. Mitsotakis emphasized that the government would swiftly assist individuals and businesses impacted by the disaster.

Starting on Monday, procedures for supporting households and businesses affected by the floods will commence. Immediate financial aid will be provided to people whose homes, farms, and fields were submerged in mud waters, helping them cover their urgent needs. Subsequent phases of compensation and funding will be directed toward restoring properties and rebuilding infrastructure.

The flooding occurred over a two-day period, starting on September 4, and the floodwaters began receding on September 7. Entire villages in some regions have been cut off and can only be reached by boats and helicopters. To assist those stranded, drones have been used to deliver food, water, and medicines.

The disaster has also had a severe impact on agriculture, with over 70,000 hectares of land submerged by water and mud. This has resulted in extensive damage to fertile soil, making it challenging for farmers to return to normal production. Experts and local producers estimate that it could take up to five years to fully recover and cultivate crops once again.

The Greek government is prioritizing swift assistance and recovery measures to support the flood-affected communities in their time of need.
