Hundreds of Hindus in the U.S. state of California have protested against an anti-caste discrimination bill, arguing that it may lead to instances of Hinduphobia if signed into law.The SB 403 bill, which aims to outlaw caste-based discrimination in the state, was passed in the California Senate with a 31-5 vote and now awaits Governor Gavin Newsom’s approval. If signed, California will become the first U.S. state to include caste as a protected category in its anti-discrimination laws.Protesters in Sacramento held banners and placards, urging Governor Newsom to veto the bill. The Hindu American Foundation (HAF), which plans to file a lawsuit against the bill, called on Newsom to stand against discrimination against Indian Americans and racially profiling our community. The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) argued that the bill would silence Hindus and is not neutral like existing categories such as race, religion, and gender. The bill, introduced by Senator Aisha Wahab, adds caste as a protected category to California’s Unruh Civil Rights Act, which ensures equal accommodations and services. Supporters of the bill conducted a hunger strike to encourage Newsom to sign it into law. Newsom’s office stated that he would evaluate the bill upon its arrival. The bill had previously passed the State Assembly with a 55-3 vote, indicating widespread support.
