BJP State President Nalin Kumar Kateel said the culprit behind the rape and murder of Sowjanya in Dharmasthala in 2012, should be awarded death penalty. He was speaking at a protest held by the BJP seeking justice for Sowjanya at Belthangady.
It was the BJP government that handed over the case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and later, the Siddaramaiah Government handed over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). No people’s representative should speak about the case when it is in the CBI court. We have faith in the CBI and the law. However, the verdict in this case was that the accused was innocent. In that case, the actual accused behind the case should be arrested and awarded the death sentence, Kateel said.
There is a provision for re-investigation into a case, which could not be proved by the CBI. Hence, the BJP MLAs and MPs request the Chief Minister to order a re-investigation into the case. The BJP has taken a stern stand that the culprit in the case should be arrested to ensure justice for Sowjanya. Those who have any information about the accused in the case will be given Central Government’s protection if they are ready to produce proof to assist the investigation, Kateel said.
The BJP will stand with the family of Sowjanya and the party will continue the protest till the case finds a logical end. It is very clear that the entire district is with the family of Sowjanya, he said. We will meet the Chief Minister and the Governor soon to seek a re-investigation into the case, he added.
