For the past 7 years, scientist Rakesh Nayyar has been a beacon of light in the lives of cancer patients, warming their hearts with a simple cup of tea each morning. Through his heartfelt service, he has been an integral part of ‘Mission Chai,’ a noble initiative aimed at offering solace and healing to those battling deadly diseases. What began with 100 cups of tea has now grown to benefit 1500 individuals. Rakesh Nayyar, along with the support of his colleague Manjula, a fellow scientist involved in Chandrayaan 3’s control department, embarked on this inspiring journey. Every day, armed with a budget of Rs 2,500, they distribute almond milk, tea, biscuits, and an assortment of fruits to patients in need. Among those who have experienced the heartwarming impact of ‘Mission Chai’ are the patients of Kidwai Cancer Hospital. Rakesh Nayyar’s tea has become a source of fondness and comfort for them. He expresses his joy in knowing that these small acts of kindness have contributed to a success as monumental as Chandrayaan, the Indian lunar exploration program. Behind Nayyar’s dedication lies a poignant motivation. Nearly a decade ago, he found himself in a hospital in Amritsar, Punjab, as his father-in-law battled for his life. After his father-in-law’s leg was amputated due to gangrene, Nayyar vividly remembers a grandmother who approached him in the hospital. Her simple inquiry, have you drunk tea, followed by a cup of tea, left an indelible mark on his heart. Her smile became an enduring symbol of courage and resilience. Even after relocating to Bangalore, her words and smile remained etched in Nayyar’s memory, propelling him to pay her kindness forward. The selfless efforts of Rakesh Nayyar and his colleagues remind us of the profound impact that small acts of compassion can have on the lives of those facing adversity.
