In a major collaborative drive to reclaim public spaces and restore urban mobility, the Bengaluru West City Corporation has launched an aggressive campaign to tow and relocate thousands of long-abandoned and accident-seized vehicles choking police stations, footpaths, and neighborhood roads.
The initiative was formally inaugurated in front of the Rajajinagar Police Station by West Corporation Commissioner Dr. Rajendra K.V. and Rajajinagar MLA S. Suresh Kumar, alongside Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Karthik Reddy. The concerted action addresses a long-standing grievance of residents and commuters who have struggled with blocked pavements and bottlenecked corridors caused by derelict cars, two-wheelers, and auto-rickshaws left rotting outside law enforcement facilities for years.
Addressing the media during the launch, Commissioner Dr. Rajendra K.V. highlighted the rapid progress of the cleanup operation. Across the ten legislative assembly segments falling under the West Corporation’s jurisdiction, municipal teams have identified over 453 abandoned vehicles and served formal removal notices to owners. Already, 100 derelict vehicles have been successfully cleared and shifted to designated yards in Chandra Layout and Bommashettyhalli. Specifically within the Rajajinagar division, 34 obstructive vehicles were towed away on the opening day alone.
Echoing these concerns, MLA S. Suresh Kumar noted that the accumulation of junk vehicles has severely marred the city’s aesthetic appeal while creating severe traffic hazards. He pointed out that the issue has been raised repeatedly in the legislative assembly, prompting the state to allocate dedicated towing vehicles for every assembly constituency in the West zone, alongside expansive parking plots in Bommashettyhalli (Dasanapura) and Chandra Layout.
Authorities have clarified that owners of towed vehicles still possess a final opportunity to settle regulatory penalties and reclaim their property through proper verification channels. For unclaimed units, legal disposal pathways involving scrap transfer and public auctions are being expedited in coordination with the transport department. Following the launch, senior officials inspected the Rajajinagar Police Station Command Centre, laying down strict operational guidelines for continuous, zone-wide enforcement.
