US Senate faces Crypto Bill vote

Washington

The US Senate is set to vote Tuesday on whether to advance the Clarity Act, a cryptocurrency bill that could establish a federal regulatory framework for digital assets.

The legislation is a key priority for the cryptocurrency industry, which argues that clearer rules would provide companies with legal certainty. The industry has spent hundreds of millions of dollars lobbying and campaigning to support the bill.

However, Senate Republican leaders face uncertainty over whether the measure can secure the 60 votes required to advance. Republicans released revised legislation Sunday to address concerns raised by the banking industry and some Democrats, including questions over ethics and officeholder conflicts.

The procedural vote, scheduled shortly after 2 p.m. EDT, could become a decisive test. Analysts say the Senate has limited time remaining on its calendar, with the election year creating competing priorities. A failed vote could leave little opportunity to revive the bill.

The crypto market has largely anticipated that the bill would not become law soon. Investors may therefore not view another delay as a major market shock, although passage could reduce regulatory uncertainty and encourage institutional participation.

A major dispute involves restrictions on public officials benefiting from cryptocurrency businesses. Democrats have sought tighter safeguards, with concerns partly focused on President Donald Trump’s cryptocurrency interests.

The revised bill would strengthen enforcement powers for state attorneys general and require public officials to divest significant financial interests in crypto-focused companies or place those holdings in blind trusts. The vote will test whether lawmakers can compromise.
