Vehicle sales climb

India produced more than 31.57 lakh vehicles in August 2026, while domestic sales recorded strong growth across passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
Passenger vehicle sales rose 36.5 per cent year-on-year to 4,39,309 units in August, compared with 3,21,901 units during the same month last year. SIAM said total production of passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers and quadricycles stood at 31,57,822 units during the month.
Three-wheeler sales increased 22.8 per cent to 93,764 units from 76,324 units a year earlier. Within the segment, passenger carrier sales climbed 22.4 per cent to 78,680 units, while goods carrier sales rose 34.9 per cent to 13,320 units.
However, sales of e-rickshaws declined six per cent to 1,264 units, while e-cart sales fell 38.3 per cent to 500 units.
Two-wheeler sales grew 10.5 per cent to 20,34,698 units from 18,41,954 units in August 2025. Scooter sales recorded a sharper rise of 23.8 per cent to 8,55,715 units, while motorcycle sales increased 2.4 per cent to 11,33,047 units.
SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers recorded their highest-ever August sales in 2026. He attributed the growth partly to a lower base in the previous year.
Menon said strong consumer confidence, resilient rural markets, improving financing conditions and growing adoption of alternative drivetrains were supporting demand. He added that festive demand was expected to provide an additional boost and contribute to healthy second-quarter numbers.
