Adopting constitutional ideals and democratic principles in daily life can effectively resolve most societal problems, stated Transport and Chikkaballapura District In-charge Minister Byrathi Suresh on Tuesday.
Inaugurating the International Day of Democracy celebrations at Kannada Bhavan, organized by the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, and Social Welfare Department, the Minister strongly defended affirmative action. He asserted that reservations remain indispensable as long as social inequality persists, warning that eliminating them would widen the divide between the rich and the downtrodden.
Describing Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s Constitution as the nation’s guiding light—comparable to the Bhagavad Gita, Quran, and Bible—Suresh noted that its protections helped eradicate bonded labor and untouchability while decentralizing power to marginalized communities.
Highlighting this year’s theme, “Youth Parliament,” Suresh urged young citizens to participate actively in democratic governance and make conscientious decisions, transcending barriers of caste, creed, and language to live unitedly as patriotic Indians. On the occasion, dignitaries paid rich floral tributes to Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya on his birth anniversary, recalling his engineering feats and dedicated nation-building legacy.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner G. Prabhu remarked that democracy stands superior to alternative systems like monarchy or military regimes because people retain supreme sovereignty.
Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr. Y. Naveen Bhat led the ceremonial reading of the Preamble. Karnataka Janapada Academy Chairman Gollahalli Shivaprasad, District Guarantee Schemes Authority Chairman N. Ramesh, Superintendent of Police Padmini Sahoo, Assistant Commissioner D.H. Ashwin, Tahsildar Rashmi, and community leaders attended the convention. The gathering concluded with a collective pledge to protect democratic liberties, preserve communal harmony, and ensure social justice across the region.
