Principal District and Sessions Judge Kiran Siddappa Gangannavar called for greater public awareness of laws protecting senior citizens, saying such awareness can help prevent abuse and neglect and allow elderly people to live peacefully and with dignity.
He was speaking after inaugurating a one-day workshop on the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, at Dr. V.S. Acharya Hall in Manipal. The programme was organised by the district administration and several departments and senior citizen organisations. The workshop focused on helping officials and voluntary groups understand and implement the law effectively.
Gangannavar said changing lifestyles, urbanisation, technology and the growth of nuclear families have created new challenges for elderly people. He said senior citizens carry valuable life experience and wisdom and deserve care, respect and protection. He stressed that legal awareness must be supported by humanitarian and social values.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Abid Gadyal said society must protect senior citizens just as children are cared for while growing up. Deputy Director Premamurthy K. said the rising number of elderly people has also increased the need for old-age homes and care centres. He said efforts are being made to spread awareness about financial security, healthcare and social inclusion.
District Legal Services Authority Member Secretary Nitin Yashwant Rao spoke about ethical values and social responsibilities in implementing laws. Ravindranath Shanbhag discussed important cases and case studies, while retired officer M. Niranjan Bhat explained the Act and tribunal procedures. Senior citizens also shared their concerns with officials and received guidance on resolving them. The programme highlighted the need for collective responsibility to ensure elderly people receive security, respect and support.
