GUWAHATI
Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan on Monday laid the foundation stone for infrastructure projects worth ₹110 crore at Gauhati University, including a multidisciplinary academic building, a boys’ hostel and an international students’ hostel.
The projects also include development works related to the university auditorium and library. Addressing the gathering, Radhakrishnan highlighted Gauhati University’s history and its role as the first university in Northeast India, established in 1948 after a public movement led by prominent leaders, including Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi.
He said the university has grown into a leading institution, with NAAC A+ accreditation and a ninth rank among State Public Universities in the NIRF 2025 rankings. He also appreciated its research in areas including the Brahmaputra Basin, endangered languages, multilingualism, women’s studies, environmental sustainability and Indian Knowledge Systems.
Radhakrishnan stressed the importance of preserving India’s linguistic heritage and encouraged greater academic and literary exchanges between Assam and Tamil Nadu. He also highlighted the rise in women’s enrolment in higher education and praised Assam’s progress in infrastructure, connectivity, education and employment.
Calling on students and researchers to contribute to Viksit Bharat @2047, the Vice-President urged them to pursue innovation and research that address community needs. He also released two publications and joined students in taking a “No to Drugs” pledge. The programme was attended by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other dignitaries.
