Illegal transportation of rice meant for the government’s Annabhagya food scheme has once again raised serious questions in Gadag district.
Allegations of political influence over the racket have also surfaced, although such claims remain to be established through investigation. A recent joint operation by Mundargi police and Food Department officials has brought fresh attention to the issue.
Acting on specific information, officials chased and stopped a Tata Canter lorry near Maktumpur village in Mundargi taluk. The vehicle, bearing registration number KA01 AM6176, was allegedly carrying Annabhagya rice through an illegal route. Authorities seized the vehicle and ration rice worth lakhs of rupees. The lorry reportedly belongs to Doddabasappa Kamatara. The seizure has raised concerns about how government-supplied rice is being diverted before reaching eligible beneficiaries.
During questioning, the driver allegedly told police that he was transporting the rice along with Viresh Badigera and Budappa Kuri. Police have registered an FIR at Mundargi police station against Doddabasappa Kamatara, Viresh Badigera and Budappa Kuri in connection with the case. The investigation is expected to establish where the rice came from, who arranged its transportation and where it was ultimately intended to go.
Sources and local residents have alleged that a wider network may be operating through fair price shops, warehouses, transporters and rice mills. There are also allegations that influential individuals could be protecting the racket, but these claims have not yet been proven. According to the allegations, diverted ration rice may be sent to mills in neighbouring districts or other states, polished and repacked in branded bags before being sold in the open market at much higher prices.
Residents say the Mundargi seizure could represent only a small part of a larger problem. They have urged the police and Food Department to investigate the entire supply chain rather than stopping with vehicle seizures. The authorities have also been asked to identify everyone involved, regardless of their position or influence. A thorough investigation, supported by evidence, will be necessary to protect the Annabhagya scheme and ensure that rice meant for poor families reaches them without diversion.
