Kerala Electric Corridor

Kerala is preparing to develop the 622-km National Highway 66 stretch from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram as India’s first electric truck corridor, aiming to make freight transport cleaner and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
The proposed project will include a network of charging stations along the highway. A study by the Kerala State Electricity Board Limited and the International Council on Clean Transportation estimates that an initial charging network of 12.5 MW will be required, with an investment of about Rs 19 crore.
The plan is not limited to installing chargers. It also aims to strengthen the electricity network so that it can handle growing demand as more heavy trucks shift to battery-powered vehicles. Officials said the project could become a model for electrifying freight transport while preparing the power system for future needs.
The proposed corridor will cover the entire NH 66 stretch between Kasaragod and Thiruvananthapuram. The study was presented at the India Clean Transport Summit 2026 in Delhi, highlighting the need for coordinated planning between transport and electricity infrastructure.
Under the proposed scheme, incentives will depend on the gross vehicle weight of electric trucks, covering vehicles from 3.5 tonnes to 55 tonnes. The initiative is expected to support the wider use of electric trucks and help Kerala move towards cleaner and more efficient freight transportation.
