VIJAYAPURA
Vijayapura Deputy Commissioner Dr. Anand K. has directed officials to ensure segregation of waste into four categories — wet, dry, hazardous and e-waste — and ensure scientific disposal to make the ‘Garbage-Free Ward’ initiative successful across urban areas.
Chairing a review meeting on the progress of urban local bodies at the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Saturday, Dr. Anand stressed the need to create greater public awareness about waste segregation and disposal. He directed civic workers to educate residents and encourage them to follow proper waste management practices. Bulk waste generators should also be identified and registered by the respective urban local bodies, he said.
The DC said instructed officials to expand the campaign and improve public participation. Garbage complaints should be addressed within 24 hours, with officials monitoring the situation and immediately assigning field staff to clear reported waste, he said.
Officials were directed to identify garbage black spots and take preventive measures to stop people from dumping waste at such locations. Waste generated at bus stands, railway stations, markets, fairs and other public places should be collected and disposed of without delay, he instructed.
Dr. Anand called for scientific solid waste management across the district and said strict action should be taken against those who continue violating waste disposal rules despite adequate awareness. He directed urban local body chief officers to impose fines on people dumping garbage indiscriminately in public places.
He also called for special cleanliness plans with sanitation given priority and instructed officials to complete construction of Material Recovery Facilities at the earliest.
Urban Development Cell Project Director Badruddin Saudagar, Vijayapura Municipal Corporation Commissioner Vijay Mekkalki and chief officers of various urban local bodies attended the meeting.
