Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, criticised the State Government over the clashes that reportedly occurred near Basavanagudi during Eid-Milad celebrations in Bengaluru.
Speaking to reporters, Narayanaswamy referred to allegations of stone pelting and attacks on properties, including the office of activist Puneeth Kerehalli, during the procession. He also expressed concern over reports that iron and steel rods were allegedly carried by some persons in the crowd. Questioning the role of the police, he asked how such materials were allowed during the procession and sought an explanation regarding the security arrangements put in place for the event.
Demanding strict action against all those involved in the clashes, Narayanaswamy urged the government to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that the guilty are brought to justice. He also warned that the Opposition would pursue legal and political measures if appropriate action was not taken.The police are yet to issue a detailed statement regarding the allegations and the circumstances that led to the incident.
Speaking to reporters, after visiting the affected areas, Narayanaswamy referred to the alleged rape and murder of Ashwini of Hokrani village in Sirwar taluk, the alleged abduction and rape of Ranemma of Lingasugur and the murder of Bhoomananda of Haddinal village.
He said he had visited the spots to ascertain the circumstances behind the incidents and understand why such crimes against members of the Dalit community were occurring repeatedly.
Referring to the Ashwini case, he said she had completed her graduation a year ago. While one person had been arrested, the role of others, if any, should be established through a detailed investigation, he said. He also noted that some police personnel had been suspended for alleged dereliction of duty, but added that suspension alone was not sufficient and measures must be taken to prevent such incidents from recurring.
I will gather information about the Ranemma case in Lingasugur, he said. Regarding the Bhoomananda murder, he said preliminary information suggested that personal enmity was involved and that two persons were reportedly rowdy-sheeters. He said he would collect more details locally.
