Former BBMP Opposition Leader A.H. Basavaraju said students educated in government schools are becoming responsible citizens and achieving success in different fields. He was speaking after distributing notebooks and school bags to students at the Government Senior Primary School in Hombalamma Peta, Magadi.
Basavaraju said a former student of the school is now serving as a Hassan District Judge. He added that the school has also produced writers, soldiers serving the country and athletes who have competed at state and national levels. He urged students to set clear goals, work consistently and dream of becoming responsible officers who contribute to society.
Expressing concern over falling enrolment in government schools, Basavaraju blamed government and elected representatives for not giving enough attention to the institutions. He recalled that a government school in Veerapur, the birthplace of Trividha Dasohi Dr. Shivakumar Swamiji, was once facing closure. After he wrote to the government and highlighted the issue, the closure was stopped.
He welcomed the establishment of KPS schools in every gram panchayat but stressed that existing government schools must also be protected. He called for greater attention to schools in border areas and said students should use every available opportunity. Discipline, concentration and regular practice, he said, can help children succeed despite limited facilities.
Basavaraju said he had been providing notebooks, bags and other essential facilities to students and schools for 15 years and would extend the support to government schools across the district in future. Several public representatives, teachers and local leaders attended the programme. The initiative ended with an appeal for students to study hard and bring pride to their families, teachers and Magadi taluk.
