The 5th Additional District and Sessions Court of Puttur has ordered a 10-year rigorous imprisonment sentence and a fine of Rs 3.05 lakh for the culprit in the case of acid attack on a woman.
K Jayanand (60), a resident of Kodimbal, Kadaba, was convicted. In this regard, a case was registered against the accused at the Kadaba police station in 2020 under sections 354A, 509, 504, 506, 448, 307 and 326A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) dated 06/2020. The then Inspector of Puttur Women’s Police Station, Kusumadhara, who conducted the investigation, collected evidence against the accused and submitted a chargesheet to the court.
The 5th Additional District and Sessions Court, Puttur, after considering the evidence and documents, concluded that the charges were proven. Judge Sadanand Nagappa Naik sentenced the convict to 10 years rigorous imprisonment under Section 326A of the Indian Penal Code and a fine of Rs 3 lakh. The judge also ordered that in case of failure to pay the fine, he should undergo an additional 2 years simple imprisonment.
Similarly, under Section 504, a sentence of 1 year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 has been imposed. The court has ordered that in case of failure to pay the fine, an additional 3 months of simple imprisonment will have to be served.The verdict once again emphasized the importance of evidence in the investigation and judicial trial of serious crimes, including acid attacks on women. The case was argued by government prosecutors Krishnaveni, Harishchandra Udyavar, Prakash Chandra Shetty and K Jayanthi.
