Journalist accused of assault: Govt doctor suspended from service

The Health Department has ordered the suspension of a government doctor for allegedly assaulting and threatening the life of a daily newspaper’s Kundapur reporter. A case has been registered against the doctor at the Kundapur police station based on a complaint filed by the journalist who was attacked.

Kundapur Public Hospital surgeon Dr Mahendra Shetty has been suspended on charges of assault. Journalist Srikanth Hemmadi, who was attacked, has been admitted to a local hospital for treatment.

Reporter Srikanth Hemmadi was having tea with his wife at a hotel in Kundapur when Dr Mahendra Shetty suddenly showed anger and abused him with abusive words. It is alleged that Srikanth was attackedin front of his wife, threatening, are you publishing a report against me. The incident was also captured on CCTV camera, and the hotel staff intervened.

A case has been registered against the accused Dr Mahendra Kumar Shetty for assaulting, abusing and threatening to kill a newspaper reporter Srikanth on August 21 in Kundapur. A case has been registered at Kundapur Police Station under Crime No.: 71/2026 Sections 126(2) 115(2) 352 351(2) BNS. A case has been registered against the complainant for the attack out of hatred over a report published in a newspaper earlier about the surgeons of the Kundapur Government Hospital receiving money from in-patients. District Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said in a statement that an investigation will be conducted and appropriate legal action will be taken against the accused.

The department has ordered the suspension of Dr. Mahendra Kumar Shetty from government service in connection with the allegations of assault on journalist Srikanth. The footage of Dr. Mahendra Kumar Shetty suddenly assaulting journalist Srikanth Hemmadi on August 21 while he was at a hotel has been circulated in the media and social media. Based on the report given by the Udupi District Health and Family Welfare Officer in this regard, it is considered that Dr Mahendra Kumar Shetty’s behavior is unbecoming of a government employee.
