Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah urged Congress workers to familiarise the younger generation with the ideals and contributions of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and former Karnataka Chief Minister D. Devaraj Urs.
Speaking at a programme at Freedom Park to mark their birth anniversaries, Siddaramaiah said both leaders had made memorable contributions to social justice and the creation of an egalitarian society. He noted that their birthdays falling on the same day was significant.
Siddaramaiah recalled Rajiv Gandhi’s emphasis on youth, saying he believed young people were the future of the country. He credited him with reducing the voting age to 18 and promoting science, technology and telecommunications. Rajiv Gandhi also strengthened political participation of women and disadvantaged sections through the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments.
Recalling Devaraj Urs’ tenure, Siddaramaiah said he worked to ensure equal opportunities and social justice. Urs implemented land reforms, abolished manual scavenging and introduced debt-relief measures. He also implemented the Havanur Commission recommendations to expand educational and employment opportunities for backward communities.
Siddaramaiah also recalled his own political journey after Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in 1991, saying the postponement of the election in which he was contesting from Koppal affected his political career.
He urged Congress workers to spread awareness about the two leaders’ contributions to democracy, social justice and dignity for disadvantaged sections.
