Wenlock hospital gets separate critical care block

CH NEWS, MANGALURU

During the Covid pandemic, the entire Wenlock District Hospital had to be completely converted into a Covid hospital, which caused severe problems for general patients and other emergency treatments. To prevent such a situation from recurring in the future, a new ‘Critical Care Block’ (CCB) is being prepared at a cost of Rs. 24 crores as a separate and alternative ‘Isolated Hospital’ model within the Wenlock premises to be used in case of epidemic diseases.

The construction of this well-equipped building, which is being constructed in partnership with the Central Government’s ‘Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission’ (PM-ABHIM) and the state government, 60 percent central and 40 percent state funding), is almost complete and will be available for patient use in the next two to three months.

In case of any outbreak of Covid, Nipah or any serious infectious diseases in the future, this entire critical care block will be immediately converted into an ‘Isolated Hospital’ without disrupting the normal functioning of the main hospital. Thereby, there is a comprehensive system for providing separate state-of-the-art ICU, ventilators and emergency treatment for infectious patients.

Dr Shivaprasad, District Surgeon and Superintendent of Wenlock District Hospital, said, last time, when Covid came, the entire Wenlock Hospital was converted into a Covid hospital. This critical care block has been built with the aim of having a separate isolated hospital so that other departments do not suffer if such epidemics or high-profile infections occur in the future. As soon as the epidemic broke out, it was converted into an isolated hospital and all arrangements were made to provide state-of-the-art treatment. During normal days, it will function as an emergency trauma care.
