MLAs seek halt to BSSK auction, factory revival

CH NEWS, Bidar

Bidar South MLA Dr. Shailendra Beldale and Humnabad MLA Dr. Siddu Patil have urged the Karnataka government to stop the proposed auction of BSSK Sugar Factory and revive it by leasing it to a suitable organisation.

The MLAs made the appeal during a meeting with Sugar and Textiles Minister Rudrappa Manappa Lamani in Bengaluru.

The BSSK factory has remained closed for several years, creating difficulties for sugarcane growers in Bidar and nearby areas. The MLAs said reopening the unit would provide farmers with a nearby market and help reduce transportation costs. They also highlighted the factory’s importance to workers and thousands of families whose livelihoods depend directly or indirectly on its operations.

The representatives argued that leasing the factory, instead of auctioning it, would be more beneficial to farmers and workers. They urged the government to give the matter special attention and take steps to revive the unit through a scientifically and economically sustainable plan.

Responding to the appeal, Minister Lamani reportedly assured the MLAs that a stay order on the auction process would be issued the following day. He also said a meeting of elected representatives from Bidar district would be held on Monday or Tuesday to discuss the issue and arrive at an appropriate decision.

The MLAs said reopening BSSK could strengthen the district’s economy by improving sugarcane marketing and creating direct and indirect employment. They added that increased activity could benefit transport, trade and small industries. They appealed to the government to take an early decision in favour of farmers, workers and the wider economic interests of the region.
