TIRUVANNAMALAI
Police seized around 450 kg of gutka from a car at a check post in Kariyamangalam village near Chengam town in Tiruvannamalai district on Tuesday. The seizure was made during a special checking operation carried out on the Cuddalore–Chittoor Highway.
The operation was conducted by a special police team following orders from Superintendent of Police R. Uthayakumar. Officers carried out a surprise inspection at the check post as part of efforts to prevent the illegal movement of prohibited tobacco products through the area.
According to the police, the large consignment was found inside a car during the inspection. The officers seized the gutka and took the vehicle into their custody for further investigation. The recovery has raised concerns over the movement and distribution of banned tobacco products in the region.
Police have launched an investigation to identify the people behind the consignment. Special teams have been formed to trace and arrest the driver of the car and its owner. Officials are also examining the circumstances under which the gutka was being transported and where the consignment was allegedly headed.
The seizure is part of continuing efforts by the police to check the illegal transportation and sale of gutka and other prohibited tobacco products. Authorities are expected to gather more information during the investigation and take further action against those found responsible. Police said such checks would continue regularly across the district to prevent similar illegal tobacco consignments from reaching local consumers.
