Elephant squad list ready

Minister Reddy releases 1st list of Dasara participating jumbos

Mysuru

Preparations are in full swing for the Gajapayana, the ceremonial journey of elephants that marks the beginning of the preparations for the world-famous Mysuru Dasara. The first batch of Dasara elephants is scheduled to arrive in Mysuru on August 26, setting the stage for the grand festival.

The list of elephants selected for this year’s Dasara was released by Forest Minister Ramalinga Reddy in Bengaluru on Tuesday. DCF Prabhugowda and other forest officials were present on the occasion. A total of 20 elephants have been identified from the Mattigodu, Bheemanakatte, Doddaharave, Dubare, Balle and Rampura elephant camps. Of these, the names of 16 elephants have been finalised, while the complete list is expected to be confirmed on Wednesday. The list released by the Minister includes elephants such as Gopi, Srirama, Chaitra, Sugreeva, Kaveri, Dhananjaya, Lakshmi, Ekalavya, Prashantha, Roopa, Mahendra, Srikanta, Harsha and Bhagiratha.

Abhimanyu (un)likely to carry the ‘Golden Howdah’ again

The major challenge before the forest authorities is the selection of the elephant to carry the Ambari (Golden Howdah) during the Dasara procession. However, all indications are that the much-loved ‘Captain’ Abhimanyu, who has successfully carried the Ambari since 2020, will once again lead the Dasara elephant contingent this year. At the same time, Prashantha, Gopi, Dhananjaya and Mahendra will also undergo specialised training to carry the Ambari. Forest officials are reportedly considering Prashantha as Abhimanyu’s successor for the prestigious responsibility in the coming years.

 Prashantha to succeed Abhimanyu?

The 53-year-old Prashantha has won the admiration of both officials and the public with his disciplined gait and gentle temperament. His calm nature and steady performance have made him a strong contender to take over as the next Captain of the Dasara Gajapade.

With the Gajapayana just days away, Mysuru is once again gearing up to welcome its majestic elephant brigade, signalling the arrival of the much-awaited Nada Habba Mysuru Dasara.
