Karnataka aims to become leading sporting state: DCM

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Sports Minister Dr G Parameshwara said the government is taking several measures to strengthen sports and make the state one of India’s leading sporting states.

Speaking at a felicitation programme organised by the Karnataka State Basketball Association at Karnataka Olympic Bhavan, he congratulated junior and youth basketball teams for their achievements in national championships. He said the government has introduced direct recruitment for medal-winning sportspersons and provided reservation in government jobs. While 2% reservation was initially provided in police recruitment, it was later increased to 3%. The government is also working to fill 72,000 vacant posts, with sportspersons eligible for 2% reservation.

Parameshwara said athletes who participated in the Commonwealth Games were given ₹5 lakh each as incentives, while medal winners would receive ₹15 lakh.

The government is focusing on sports infrastructure, including plans for a Sports City on around 60 acres near Devanahalli. A comprehensive plan has also been prepared to upgrade Bengaluru’s Kanteerava Stadium at an estimated cost of ₹5,000 crore. The upgraded facility could help Karnataka host national and international competitions. Five acres of land has also been allotted for basketball development.

Parameshwara said Karnataka has performed strongly in basketball and swimming, with the state remaining national swimming champions for 33 years. He said the government would provide all-round support through training, infrastructure, employment opportunities and financial incentives.

He also praised Karnataka Olympic Association president Dr K. Govindaraju for his sustained efforts to develop basketball and sports infrastructure in the state. The programme was attended by M. N. Anucheth, Commissioner of the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, and other officials.
