BLURB- India will host BRICS environment meetings in New Delhi, bringing senior officials and ministers together to strengthen cooperation on climate change and sustainable development.

India will host meetings of the BRICS Environment Working Group in New Delhi on August 17 and 18, with senior officials and environment ministers expected to discuss ways to improve cooperation on climate and environmental issues.
The meetings will be held at Bharat Mandapam under India’s BRICS chairship theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”. On August 17, senior officials will meet to discuss the priorities of the Environment Working Group and the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development. The 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting will be held on August 18 and will be chaired by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav.
The Environment Working Group was formed in 2015 at the first BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting in Moscow. It works to address common environmental concerns, share experiences and promote practical solutions among member countries. The Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development was set up in 2024 to strengthen cooperation on climate-related matters.
India has selected four key areas for discussions during its 2026 BRICS chairship. These are promoting sustainable lifestyles, afforestation and forest fire management, circular economy and adaptation to climate change. The meetings will also focus on disaster resilience and sustainable development.
The environment ministry said India has already started discussions through virtual meetings, technical sessions, webinars and dialogues held between March and July. These included talks on resource efficiency, circular economy, carbon markets, land degradation, desertification, drought and wildfire management. The upcoming meetings are expected to build on these discussions and help BRICS countries work together on environmental challenges and find practical ways to support a greener future for all together.
