Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge on Thursday criticised the BJP over its ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, saying the initiative should begin at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in Nagpur.
Kharge questioned the RSS’s history of hoisting the national flag at its headquarters, claiming that the tricolour was officially hoisted there only in 2002. He also questioned why the organisation’s ideological association with the Bhagwa Dhwaj took precedence over the national flag for decades.
He asked whether RSS route marches had seen uniformed swayamsevaks carrying the Indian tricolour, accusing the BJP of issuing “Desh Bhakt” certificates to others while questioning their patriotism.
His remarks came amid the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign being promoted as part of Independence Day celebrations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had urged citizens to hoist the tricolour at their homes and described the campaign as a tribute to freedom fighters and a pledge towards a developed India.
Kharge said the BJP should first explain the RSS’s historical position on the national flag before lecturing citizens about patriotism.
