The Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Thursday paid heartfelt tributes to several prominent personalities who recently passed away, recalling their contributions to public service, politics, social welfare and culture.
Pro-tem Speaker T.B. Jayachandra moved the condolence resolution at the beginning of the proceedings. The House remembered former minister D. Sudhakar, former Assembly Deputy Speaker C. Veeranna, former ministers Venkataramanappa and Ramachandra Gowda, former Rajya Sabha member H. Hanumanthappa and several former legislators.
The contributions of celebrated playback singers S. Janaki and Asha Bhosle were also recalled. Members highlighted Janaki’s contribution to Indian cinema, noting her thousands of songs across several languages and numerous national and state awards. Asha Bhosle was remembered for her distinguished career spanning multiple Indian languages and musical genres.
The House also paid tribute to Chennamma, wife of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda. Members recalled her simple lifestyle, hospitality and the support she provided to Deve Gowda throughout his political career.
Former minister D. Sudhakar was remembered for his service in several portfolios and his role in the movement for implementation of the Bhadra Upper Project. The House also recalled the public service of H. Hanumanthappa, who served three terms in the Rajya Sabha.
Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka and several members spoke in support of the condolence resolution. The House later observed silence in memory of the departed.

Members recalled their contributions to public life, politics, social welfare and culture. The House also remembered Chennamma, wife of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, for her simple life and support to her family. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Opposition Leader R. Ashoka joined members in expressing condolences before the House observed silence.
New ministers’ introduction deferred
The introduction of newly inducted ministers was deferred on the opening day of the Legislature session after Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka raised an objection. Ashoka said the solemn condolence proceedings should not be mixed with the celebratory occasion of introducing new ministers. Though pro-tem Speaker T.B. Jayachandra initially said the introduction was permissible under convention and rules, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar agreed with Ashoka’s suggestion. “Let the condolence proceedings take place first. I will introduce the new ministers to the House afterwards,” Shivakumar said. The House subsequently took up the condolence resolution.
